Field Notes · Website Cost

What should a professional small-business website cost?

A useful website quote explains what is being solved, who is doing the work, what is included at launch, and what the business will still need afterward.

Short answer

There is no honest single price for a professional small-business website. Scope changes when the project needs strategy, copy, custom design, development, ecommerce, migration, integrations, search preservation, photography, or post-launch support. Compare the work inside the quote, not only the final number.

Page count is only one part of the price.

Two five-page websites can be completely different projects. One might use supplied copy, a familiar template, and a simple contact form. The other might require messaging work, custom interaction, a service architecture, ecommerce, redirects from an old site, analytics, CRM or email integrations, and testing across multiple devices.

That is why "How much is a five-page website?" rarely produces a useful answer by itself.

What usually changes the scope

  • Strategy and information architecture: deciding what the site needs to say and how people should move through it.
  • Copy: using supplied text, editing existing material, or writing the content from scratch.
  • Design: adapting a prebuilt system versus designing the experience around the specific business.
  • Development: straightforward pages versus custom interactions, calculators, galleries, forms, data, or integrations.
  • Ecommerce: product structure, payments, shipping, taxes, store configuration, migration, and purchasing flow.
  • Existing-site migration: preserving important URLs, metadata, analytics, and search visibility.
  • Assets: photography, video, illustrations, logos, product files, and other media.
  • After launch: hosting, maintenance, software subscriptions, content updates, analytics, and ongoing support.

A useful quote should make responsibility clear.

Before comparing two prices, ask whether each quote includes the same responsibilities. Who is writing or editing the copy? Who configures forms and analytics? Is mobile behavior tested or simply assumed? Are redirects included if the old URLs change? Who owns the domain account? What happens after launch?

A lower quote may be completely appropriate if the scope is smaller. Problems start when two proposals look similar on the surface but leave very different amounts of work for the business owner.

One-time cost and recurring cost are different decisions.

The website build is only one layer. Depending on the setup, recurring expenses can include hosting, a commerce platform, premium plugins or apps, email, domains, maintenance, subscriptions, or ongoing marketing services.

Ask for those costs separately. A business should be able to tell which expenses keep the website online, which add optional capability, and which pay for ongoing professional work.

What STATICMETHOD currently publishes

STATICMETHOD publishes its core website pricing rather than hiding the starting point behind a sales call. Current website offers include:

  • Website Rescue - $395: focused cleanup for a live site that is not doing its job.
  • Foundation Website - $1,995: a credible one-page destination for a business that needs a professional place to send customers.
  • Business Website - starting at $3,495: a custom business website built around trust, clearer service structure, and inquiries.
  • Commerce Website - starting at $5,995: an ecommerce experience built around a clear path from product to purchase.

The current scope and inclusions are listed on the Services page. A project can cost more when its requirements extend beyond those baselines.

Use market averages carefully.

Published market guides can help establish a broad range, but they combine projects with very different teams, markets, platforms, and requirements. Clutch's current pricing research shows wide variation and notes that scope and complexity have a major effect on cost. That is useful context, not a substitute for a real scope.

The more practical comparison is: What business problem does this quote solve, what work is included, and what will I still need to supply or pay for after launch?
